Hellboy: House of the Living Dead

As a reminder: ALL REVIEWS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Publication Date: November 02, 2011
Format: FC, 56 pages, HC, 7" x 10"
Price: $14.99
Age range: 16
ISBN-13: 978-1-59582-757-9

In 1956 Hellboy disappeared for five months, while investigating in Mexico. Some of those months he remembers, and would like to forget and then there are those that he says he doesn’t remember because they are too painful. Like the ones where he was a luchador and forced to wrestle Frankenstein’s creation in order to rescue a fair damsel.

The monster may be more than Hellboy can handle, as the mad doctor spills his maniacal plans. But nothing goes according to plan, and the destruction and mayhem may kill everyone including the innocent Sonia that Hellboy sought to save. Will anyone make it out of the house of the living dead? Will anyone remember the horrors?

Mignola is a master at crafting the most ridiculous of ideas and making them into a solid story. Written as an homage to the old movie monsters it is both captivating and heart breaking. It’s a solid story, that has plenty of action and things that go bump in the night.

Walking Dead Recap S2E3: Save the Last One

Shane shaves his head, well looks like someone made it out of the high school, but as he looks at himself in the mirror, he’s definitely a changed man. What did you do Shane?

Lori and Rick talk about good old times, Shane pulling legendary pranks, as Shane and Otis run the halls of the high school desperate to escape the zombie hordes. The zombies are relentless, and when the school becomes a maze with no exit. Shane may have gotten away with a lot in high school, and he may get out this time, but it’s not going to be pretty.

Rick keeps his strength up for Carl and Lori’s sake.

Carol cries in her sleep, catching Daryl’s attention. Andrea relentlessly fiddles with her gun, ignoring her cries. Poor Daryl, the poor guy can’t catch a break inside, so he goes looking for Sophia, Andrea joins him though Dale protests.

Shane plans to climb out of one of the tiny windows in the gym, Otis won’t fit, and he plans around it. He will draw the zombies away, and make a break for the locker room, where the windows are bigger. Shane doesn’t like the idea, but it’s the best one the;ve got. Otis stumbles down, and narrowly makes his escape with Shane’s assistance. Shane makes a break for the window, and only a few walkers see him. He easily dispatches a pair of them, but the drop to safety is way down there. Otis wasn’t lying about the height, and hardly anything to break his fall. As he prepares to make the leap, a zombie grabs him, and after killing him, falls to the ground below, injuring himself. He hears Otis fire off a few shots, and its time to hobble off.

Glen and T-Dog find their way to Hershel’s. Blood on the stoop is an ominous sign, but Maggie is there to welcome them. She’s wary of T-Dog’s wound, but he assures her it isn’t a bite. They go inside to join the others sitting at Carl’s bedside. Carl is getting worse, and time is running out. They need to operate soon whether or not Shane and Otis return.

Andrea questions if they’ll find Sophia, but Daryl has faith. He survived longer out in the woods when he was a kid, and was no worse for the wear. Sophia is lucky to have a guy like Daryl on her side, even if she’s likely a goner. Yeah, I don’t forsee her coming back. That’s just a little too much happy.

Lori ponders the world they live in, and if the world should have children in it. The hopelessness in her voice worries Rick, but it’s all they have. Lori’s future looks bleak, and she sees his impending death as a blessing. Rick wonders what changed, since Jenner gave them the easy way out, and she was the one that begged to keep going on. Rick doesn’t accept that, giving up is never better, but Lori’s sudden conviction fills him with doubt.

Shane hides from the walkers, but he can’t for long, and when he’s forced to use his gun, it draws them towards him. He’s all but surrounded, a flimsy fence keeping more from reaching him, as he struggles to reload. Waiting for the perfect shot, Otis shows up just in time and they kill the three zombies between them, using the final rifle rounds.

Rick and Lori sit in silence, when Carl’s sudden coughing brings them into his room. He’s scared, and Rick introduces him to Hershel. Carl is in a lot of pain, but he starts to tell Lori about the deer, when he has a sudden seizure. They watch in horror, unable to do anything but watch. Carl needs another transfusion, and Rick is going to give it to him even if it kills him.

Shane and Otis pause to catch their breath, but they only get a second of peace before the zombies interrupt.

Dale’s watch is interrupted by Carol, unable to sleep while Daryl and Andrea search for Sophia.

Daryl and Andrea end up at a tent, and they find a zombie in the trees. Some dummy had the brilliant idea to kill himself, but unlike the other tent they found this guy didn’t shoot himself, instead he hung himself, and since he had been bitten, he turned into a zombie. Other zombies ate the flesh from his legs, and Daryl plans to leave it where they found him, but Andrea trades the zombie’s death for a question. Does she want to live? She’s unsure, and Daryl feels it’s a waste on both accounts.

Carol tells Dale not to worry about Andrea. Daryl will protect her, but Dale only hears if something happens.

T-Dog gets his arm stitched by Patricia, and Glen awkwardly talks about Merle’s case of clap. But Merle’s bad luck may have saved T-dog’s life. Maggie sneaks up on Glen as he prays outside. She questions his prayers, which are all for his friends, and the two contemplate God’s existence and plans. For the guy who just had his first prayer interrupted, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. Maggie gives Glen some good advice.
Dale walks the car congested streets, looking for a sign of Andrea. There’s being concerned and then there’s doing as Dale, whose definitely starting to step over some lines.

Rick rehashes the beautiful moment that ended with the bullet in Carl’s chest, and Rick uses the fact that Carl even in the pain he was in tried to share that beautiful moment with the Stag with Lori. Even though the world is harsh and ugly, there’s still beauty, and that is worth living for.

Shane and Otis are pushed to the point of exhaustion, and the truck is still a ways out. Shane is ready to throw in the towel, but Otis isn’t ready to give up on him. He urges him ahead. They’re running low on all ammo.

Hershel’s diagnosis is bleak. Time is up, a choice must be made, and Rick leaves that choice up to Lori. She chooses life, and they prep Carl for surgery under the worse possible circumstances. And just before Hershel makes the cut, Shane returns with everything, everything except Otis, he didn’t make it. Hershel and Maggie take the news well. Rick is thankful for Shane’s return, but Shane is really shaken. Shane tells him that Otis sacrificed himself to save Shane. Rick understands, Otis wanted to make things right.

Carol is heartbroken again when they return without Sophia. Dale is so happy to see Andrea, that he’s ready to right his wrong. He gives her back her gun, and apologizes for taking away her choice to die on her terms. Things aren’t fixed, but it’s a step towards mending. Andrea is in a dark place, and she’s not ready for forgiveness yet, but she’s trying.

Losing Otis is a big blow for Maggie. She’s lost so many people in her life, and she confides in Glen her losses.

Hershel brings good news to Rick. Carl made it through surgery, and he’s stable. And with the good news, there’s still bad to be delivered. Rick goes to help break the devastating news to Patricia. She takes the news badly, and its more than Lori or Shane can handle seeing. Lori tells Shane to stay as he sits and looks over her and Carl, but he doesn’t. Maggie gives Shane a change of clothes, Otis’s and he goes to the shower, where the episode started. He looks over himself, taking in the bumps and bruises, and finds a good bald patch on his head.

And then we’re taken back to the getaway. Low on ammo, Shane and Otis run. They take a few final shots, with the zombies closing in.

Shane looks for something, hair clippers.

Each man is down to his last bullet, they’re energy all but gone too. Shane tells him he’s sorry, Otis doesn’t understand, and then Shane shoots him in the leg. Of course he does, he’s been teetering between good and bad since the show started. Shane is much like the rest of this world. Just when you think it’s all starting to look up, it turns around and kicks you in the teeth out of no where. Otis doesn’t go down without a fight, willing to take Shane down with him, but Shane is relentless in his attack, and manages to get away with Otis’s pack, but not before Otis is able to rip that patch of hair from Shane’s head, a small unworthy consolation when his life is the price. Poor Otis, he wouldn’t give up on Shane, when he should have, and look what it earned him. Nice guys become zombie crunch, and the dirtbad gets to pretend to be a hero.

We get a look of a whole new Shane, one who had been tottering on the edge of madness for so long, and has finally fallen over it.

Sam Trammell Uncensored

We all know Sam Trammell from HBO’s True Blood, right? Well, I got to know him a little better during the True Blood Q&A at ZomBcon October 22nd. From his first horror film, New York Theater, nudity, to open-mouth kissing; you name it, he answered it. Well, no season 5 spoilers. Not that the audience didn’t try.

Sam started by saying he has a big appreciation for the Horror genre. Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the first horror film he saw at age 14. “That just, that hurt me, it destroyed me.” Other anecdotes from his younger days included being a musician and playing organized sports, to going to the same high school with Jennifer Gardner and her sister.

When he was cast as Sam Merlotte, Bon Temps’ shape-shifting bar owner, he wrote a paper on the theory of shape-shifting and gave it to Alan Ball. Sam wanted to delve into what it would be like for shifters and came up with the idea that they become addicted to the shifting. Even though he did give it to Alan, he doesn’t think he ever read it. Now he feels it was kind of stupid. He did say that the True Blood writers are open to hearing ideas, but not all of the ideas are used.

Then, of course, the moderators jumped right into the sex-scenes, wanting to know how uncomfortable it is shooting them with 20 people around watching. Sam replied that he’s gotten use to the nudity especially since he has done it for theater in front of a room full of strangers. “The toughest thing about nudity is staying in shape because the bar has been set so high (raising his hand above his head) by certain people in the show.” (everyone laughs) “There’s certain of us just trying to keep up. We’re trying to get more fit, (shaking his head) but it’s impossible.” The toughest, he added, was being shirtless with Ryan Kwanten.

There actually isn’t any animosity between anyone on set, especially because everyone has different storylines. Sam commented, “We really don’t see each other.” A week before an episode starts shooting; everyone gets together for a table read. Sam adds, “That becomes a big social event.” A moderator asked if they get drunk and Sam replied, “I can drink pretty well.” Another moderator chimed in that Alex (Skarsgard) is a professional at being able to handle his liquor. He continued with a story about the night ending with a light post, urinating, and being hung. That’s all I’m gonna tell you, but man, what a story. If you weren’t there, you missed out.

Next question by a moderator was whether he does the open-Hollywood kiss or a real kiss with tongue? Sam leaned back and said, “Wow…wow, we’re really getting into it.” During the hilarity another moderator tried to change the subject, “So, you get into some fights?” He did confess, during his career, he has had a love scene with someone he didn’t like. “Yes, but I won’t say who.” He went on to say that’s true for most people in the industry.

Sam continued answering most of our questions. He shared True Blood takes 15-20 days to shoot an episode, where the standard for television is 8 days. “It’s really like a feature schedule, more like shooting a feature. It’s nice to have that time.”

I asked since the characters evolve so much over the seasons and there are so many writers that have to write the different ARCs of the series, are the writers assigned a character and stay with that character? He said there are 5-6 writers and at the beginning of the season they talk about storylines for all the different characters. Once they get the generalities, each writer writes an episode (2 per writer). “Then the writers go off and write the episode. Then there’s a writer’s assistant who’s somebody that keeps what they call ‘The Bible’ and that’s kind of everything that’s happened in the show and the rules. That’s kinda how it works.”

A couple of interesting questions I will quote are:
Q: “Alex was in a Lady GaGa video where he got to throw her off a balcony and Norman Reedus pours beer on her ass. When are we gonna see you in a GaGa video and what will you be doing?”
A: “Perhaps licking the beer off her ass.” (laughter ensues) “I don’t know something raunchy for sure.”
Q: “The scene in season 3 with you and Bill Compton…sexiest scene ever! As a woman who likes men.”
A: “So the straight women like to see a couple of men, sometimes talking suggestively about taking a shower, without their shirts on. Wow, that’s good to know. “ Sam continued, “So if I want to pick up a girl, I should find a guy, bring her into the room, take our shirts off….and that works? Then after the scene, I could go off with the girl or would we both have to go off with her?” Entire female population in the audience yelled, “BOTH!”

We then switched topics and focused on his character, Sam Merlotte. Sam (Trammell) really likes the edgier stuff and thanked the writers. He really loved playing Tommy shifting into Sam and would love to do that type of shift again, maybe Eric.

He talked about other projects including “Long Time Gone” with Virginia Madsen. It’s a little Indie project that is almost done about a dysfunctional family. He plays a drug dealer/landscaper who befriends a kid and helps him out. “It’s a really sweet story and it’s really well written. One of the best written scripts I’ve had over my hiatus.” He hopes it will be a festival movie.
Another project he did last year, “Guns, Girls, Gambling,” he plays a corrupt sheriff. “When you put on a sheriff’s belt, you are a sheriff,” he jokes. The movie also stars Gary Oldman, Dane Cook, Christen Slater, and Megan Park.

His most favorite memorable moments were being nominated for a Tony Award, getting his big film break on True Blood, and the birth of his twin boys. “It’s another major part of life that I wanted to experience.” He continues, “Seeing other little kids thinking…I’m gonna have that in a little bit.” His favorite fanboy moment was meeting Denis O’Hare. Sam was a massive fan before he was on the show stating Denis ‘made’ “Michael Clayton.” He added that Denis owns every role he’s ever done.

Sam’s favorite romantic comedy is ‘Seems Like Old Times’ with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. The funniest movie he’s seen in a long time, ‘Bridesmaids.’ Sam closed by saying he would love his next project to be a romantic comedy. “I want to do something opposite of Sam (Merlotte).”

The next morning I met Sam for some pictures. He saw me and remarked, “You’re the one with that awesome question yesterday.” Which just proves how down-earth he is. He remembers the fans he meets, probably not next week, but he remembered the next day. Even though I was there as Press, I’m a big fan and seeing him interact with other fans just makes him that more admirable.

I really want to thank Sam Trammell for being so generous. The smaller Q&A sessions are more intimate and allow a lot of fans to relax and ask questions they normally wouldn’t be able to. I also thank ZonBcon, Hilton SeaTac, and the moderators from Fangoria, Thom Carnell and Sean Smithson, and from Badassdigest.com writer, Henri Mazza for their great questions and interactions with the audience.

Nude scenes, kissing, drinking, and Alexander Skarsgard. Nothing is offlimits

What would Sam do to Lady Gaga in a video?

Sam Trammell Talks about being a father, working with an alligator, and meeting Denis O'Hare.

Buffy: Season 9 #3

As a reminder: ALL REVIEWS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Publication Date: November 09, 2011
Format: FC, 40 pages
Price: $2.99
UPC: 7 61568 18159 3 00311

All the magic in the world is suppose to be gone, and yet Buffy manages to find a boy with microwave hands, who just happens to be the one who’s leaving bodies everywhere. You know, the ones that Buffy is being blamed for. The boy has more secrets than just his microwave hands, secrets that may prove to be deadly.

Spike uses his scare tactics to get information on who is after the slayer, who may be more trouble than he can handle, if he can find the guy.

And Buffy discovers yet another thing that is her fault. Can’t the poor girl catch a break? Of course not, because no one is better under pressure, and self loathing than Buffy is, except maybe Angel. The Scooby gang is being less than helpful, wanting Buffy to turn herself over to the police rather than killing the badies around her as she always has.

The danger surrounding the slayer grows, and her support diminishes. The cliffhanger at the end of this one is the biggest in the freefall storyline yet, and makes the anticipation for the next one all the greater. This storyline is definitely picking up speed, I cannot wait for the next issue.

Baltimore: the Curse Bells #4

As a reminder: ALL REVIEWS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Publication Date: November 09, 2011
Format: FC, 32 pages
Price: $3.50
UPC: 7 61568 17868 5 00411

Baltimore is plunging deeper into darkness, and whether or not he’ll survive his descent is in question.

The girl miraculously survives the Inquisitor’s cleansing, and she is rewarded. Her homecoming brings him doubts about her entire village

Baltimore is blind with revenge. With his prey so close at hand, he’ll let nothing stop him from getting it, not even the fate of all the good left in the world.

And even Haigus sees the danger of the bells. He has no fear of death, because even in death his kind will win, which doesn’t sit well with Baltimore. But what are thousands of innocents, when revenge is so close at hand?

The ending draws closer, and as tensions mounts, even the easy decisions become hard for our hero. Baltimore has been consistent in keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Just one final chapter to this story, and I cannot possibly wait.

U.S. Theatrical Poster -- We Need To Talk About Kevin‏

Synopsis:
A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, Lynne Ramsay's WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores the factious relationship between a mother and her son.  Tilda Swinton, in a bracing, tour-de-force performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller).

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores nature vs. nurture on a whole new level as Eva's own culpability is measured against Kevin's innate evilness. Ramsay's masterful storytelling simultaneously combines a provocative moral ambiguity with a satisfying and compelling narrative, which builds to a chilling, unforgettable climax.

Distributor: Oscilloscope Laboratories
Cast: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller
Running time: 112 minutes
Theatrical Opening Dates:
December 9th - New York and Los Angeles - Qualifying run
January 27th 2012 - New York and Los Angeles - Commercial release

LOS ANGELES – October 27, 2011 – Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington and Matthew McConaughey will star in Freedom Films’ upcoming action thriller “Thunder Run” with Simon West set to direct, announced Brian Presley, CEO of Freedom Films, who will produce alongside Carissa Buffel and Kevin Matusow of Freedom Films and Jib Polhemus of The Graphic Film Company. Additional casting will begin in the next week. Hyde Park International has signed on for international sales.

“Thunder Run,” is an all CG 3-D action thriller based on the novel “Thunder Run - The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent David Zucchino. Adapting the story for the screen are Academy Award-winner Robert Port and Ken Nolan, screenwriter of “Black Hawk Down.” The Graphic Film Company will utilize proprietary facial-capture technology they used on West’s upcoming “Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3-D” along with the motion capture technology used in “AVATAR.”

“We are very excited to have attracted this outstanding level of acting and writing talent. ‘Thunder Run’ will be the first ever conventional war film made to utilize this revolutionary facial and motion capture technology and state of the art CG and 3D. Simon and I have developed this project over the last five years so it will be nice to see it come alive,” commented Presley.

“Thunder Run” is the untold story of the dangerous and bloody capture of Baghdad by American Forces at the onset of the Iraq War. In April 2003, three battalions and fewer than a thousand men launched a violent thrust of tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles into the heart of a city of five million, igniting a three-day blitzkrieg, which military professionals often refer to as a lightning strike, or “thunder run.” In telling the story of the surprise assault on Baghdad- one of the most decisive battles in recent American combat history--this movie paints the harrowing picture of the soldiers on the front lines and the realities of modern warfare.

Freedom Films is represented by Jay Cohen of the Gersh Agency. CAA represents West, Butler, Worthington, and McConaughey.

Press Release - Starz and BBC Worldwide Productions Announce New Original Series, "Da Vinci's Demons"‏

Starz and BBC Worldwide Productions Announce New Original Series
“Da Vinci’s Demons”
First Series in the Starz Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Productions Development, Production and Distribution Deal
Writer of the Upcoming Man of Steel and Co-Writer of Batman Begins,
The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, David S. Goyer, Pens Script

Los Angeles, Calif. – October 25, 2011Starz Entertainment has green-lit a new original adventure series titled “Da Vinci’s Demons,” developed and produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. This is the first project to enter production under the multi-year agreement Starz signed with BBC Worldwide Productions earlier this summer.

The series was jointly announced today by Starz Media Managing Director, Carmi Zlotnik and BBC Worldwide Productions Head, Jane Tranter.
Written by David S. Goyer, co-writer of blockbuster and critically-acclaimed films Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and writer of the highly anticipated Man of Steel, the eight-episode series is scheduled to begin production in early-2012.
“Da Vinci's Demons" is David Goyer's historical fantasy, following the "untold" story of the world's greatest genius during his raucous youth in Renaissance Florence. Brash and brilliant, the twenty five-year old da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.
David Goyer commented, "Da Vinci was the original Renaissance man -- a near-mythic figure that has world-wide appeal. After working with characters like Batman and Superman, it made a strange kind of sense for me to dive into the facts and legends swirling around his origins. This will be a show about secret histories, genius, madness, and all things profane. And I'm particularly excited that I get to do it on premium cable, where the story can be as dark and challenging and irreverent as it deserves to be. Starz and BBC Worldwide Productions have been nothing but supportive."
Zlotnik said, "David has reimagined some of the most iconic superheroes of all time, and is again building an extraordinary prism through which to rediscover the world’s greatest genius and most mysterious man. If modern day has Tony Stark, the Renaissance had da Vinci. This is a story we believe will captivate the imaginations of audiences around the world and is the first of what we expect to be many productions with our talented partners at BBC Worldwide Productions."
Jane Tranter, Head of BBC Worldwide Productions, said, “The young life of this incredibly complex and brilliant man has not yet been explored. With David Goyer, whose imagination has created juggernaut and iconic theatrical features, coupled with the premium presence of Chris Albrecht, Carmi Zlotnik and their Starz team, we couldn’t be more passionate about bringing this story to U.S. viewers and international audiences.”
Starz is expected to air the worldwide broadcast premiere in 2013. BBC Worldwide will distribute the series internationally. David S. Goyer is showrunner. Julie Gardner will serve as Executive Producer, along with BBC Worldwide Productions’ Head Jane Tranter.
“Da Vinci’s Demons” is the latest piece of distinguished, exclusive original programming announced from Starz. “Boss,” starring Kelsey Grammer and produced by Lionsgate debuted on October 21. “Spartacus: Vengeance,” season two of the breakout worldwide hit, returns in January 2012 and the much-anticipated “Magic City,” debuts in April 2012.
BBC Worldwide Productions started its scripted efforts when Jane Tranter, former Controller of BBC Fiction, arrived to run the company in January 2009. Shortly thereafter Julie Gardner, former Head of Drama, BBC Wales, joined as SVP, Scripted, BBC Worldwide Productions. Tranter and Gardner have been responsible for a plethora of titles in their careers including Doctor Who, Torchwood, Little Dorrit, Bleak House, Girl in a Café, Ashes to Ashes and State of Play. Torchwood: Miracle Day was the first scripted series produced by BBC Worldwide Productions, recently wrapped its run on Starz. The company has over 20 scripted projects in sold development with various cable and network partners as well as 10 unscripted series currently in production.
BBC Worldwide Productions and David Goyer are represented by Creative Artists Agency.
