The Big Bang Theory S8E23 - "The Maternal Combustion" Recap

Sheldon and Leonard are receiving an award for the paper they wrote together so each of their mothers comes to town for the ceremony. Beverly is intrigued by the fact that Leonard and Penny have yet to set a wedding date but Mary isn't bothered by their waiting. Sheldon lets it slip to Penny and the mothers that her engagement ring is a recycled and recut diamond drill bit. Leonard also becomes jealous that both of the mothers are doting on Sheldon and praising his accomplishments. The mothers also get into an argument after Beverly calls Mary's religious beliefs superstition. Beverly has tea with Sheldon and ponders how perhaps there were other effective ways of parenting than hers, as Mary's unconditional love yielded such an upstanding man like Sheldon. When Beverly returns, she and Mary patch things up. Beverly tries to give affection to Leonard by giving him a hug and it's enormously awkward for both of them.

Howard and Bernadette have moved into Mrs. Wolowitz's house and Stuart is still living there too. Bernadette gets fed up with the two of them along with Raj lying around and doing little to nothing. She then forces them to get up and clean the kitchen. While the three of them are cleaning the kitchen, Raj tells Howard that Bernadette acts like his mother and says it's not a healthy relationship. Howard decides he should try to clean the kitchen like an adult but does a poor job. The three men eventually break out into a rendition of "It's the Hard Knock Life" from "Annie" as they carry on with their cleaning.

The Big Bang Theory airs on Thursdays on CBS at 8PM.

View the episode trailer here:

Season two of “Salem” returns with 13 episodes at the dawn of a Witch War, and the town’s ruthless leading witch, Mary Sibley, has just completed a legendary supernatural ritual that unleashed a devastating plague on the unsuspecting citizens of Salem.  As death and disease continue to spread through the war-torn village, Mary must face off against adversaries old and new, from within Salem and beyond, who are vying for her throne.
From creators and writers Brannon Braga and Adam Simon, “Salem” is a gripping one-hour supernatural drama that boldly re-imagines the infamous 17th century witch trials in colonial Massachusetts in a world where witches are real, but they are not who or what they seem.  The series stars Janet Montgomery (“Human Target,” “Made in Jersey”), Shane West (“Nikita,” “ER”), Seth Gabel (“Arrow,” “Fringe”), Ashley Madekwe (“Revenge”), Tamzin Merchant (“Jane Eyre”), Elise Eberle (“The Astronaut Farmer”) and Iddo Goldberg(“Mob City”).  New to the cast of “Salem” for season two are Lucy Lawless (“Xena: Warrior Princess”, “Spartacus”), Stuart Townsend (“Betrayal,” “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”), Joe Doyle (“Raw”) and Oliver Bell (“The Saint”).
Guest starring in “The Wine Dark Sea” are Michael Mulheren as George Sibley, Sammi Hanratty as Dollie, Jeremy Crutchley as Hathorne and Thomas Francis Murphy as Rev. Lewis.
“Salem” is executive produced by Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, Josh Barry, Jeff Kwatinez, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson.  Nick Copus directs and serves as co-executive producer.  Filmed on location in Shreveport, Louisiana, the series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S2E19 - "The Dirty Half Dozen" Recap

Skye and Cal are returned to Afterlife by Gordon, whom Skye sends back immediately to look for Lincoln. Cal also loudly outs Jiaying regarding Skye being their daughter but she sends him to cool off while she can figure out what to do next. Gordon returns with a forehead wound matching what Raina saw in her dream, tipping her off to the fact that her dreams are visions of the future. Gordon tells Jiaying that he barely got away from Hydra, who are the ones who have Lincoln.

Coulson offers to Gonzalez to use his own team to infiltrate List's base to free Mike and Lincoln from Hydra's captivity. He also hands over Fury's toolbox as a sign of good faith. He wants to rescue the prisoners, not simply blow the base to pieces. Mike and Lincoln decide to team up to try to escape but they're first knocked out as Hydra is preparing to experiment on them.

Fitz is more than ready to brag to Simmons about attacking Ward on the plane but is shocked when Simmons begins packing grenades to try to kill Ward should he present himself to be dubious once more. Coulson and May get into an argument. He's upset that she is working for Gonzalez and she feels betrayed by all his secrets, including working with her ex-husband behind her back. He tells her that he was seeing Andrew as a therapist as he was the only professional he could see about his alien-writing. He promises to apologise to her more thoroughly later.

Skye is trying to convince Gordon to take her to rescue Lincoln. He doesn't want to but then Raina reveals that she has already seen her save Lincoln. The legitimacy of her claim is proven when she says that she saw Coulson and Ward working together. This is a detail Skye had yet to share with anyone.

Ward leaves Kara with SHIELD, believing it in her best interest to reconnect to her past life as an agent. He tells her to stay strong but this smells a lot like a breakup. Guess all Ward needed to see was Skye's bright face to realise where his heart really lies.

Simmons convinces Coulson to let her come on the mission. Gordon is convinced to take Skye to SHIELD without telling Jiaying, as Lincoln is his friend and he wants him saved. All of our original six are back together! Fitz and Simmons want to know everything Skye has been up to but she doesn't want to share anything personal with Ward around. Ward begins to debrief the team on the mission but when he sees he's getting nothing but the stink-eye from all of them, he decides it's time to has things out and says that after all his wrong-doings, the thing he regrets the most is breaking up their unity as a team.

Jiaying patches things up with Cal and agrees to let him stay in Afterlife. But Jiaying is growing suspicious of Raina and Cal warns her that she's right to be careful and that she needs to keep an eye on Raina.

Mack and Hunter make up, with Hunter saying he's forgiven Mack. Bobbi checks in on Kara, who is insistent that the team will all see the Grant she does and that he will come through for them. The team's plane is spotted by Hydra, who attempts to shoot the plane out of the sky, which it does. But this was always part of the plan, as the actual plane is dropping down with the debris.

The team makes it into the Hydra base where Bakshi is shown to still be brainwashed and loyal to Ward. The group splits up, with Bakshi, Simmons, and Skye going with Ward. Skye uses her abilities to knock the Hydra men out before the rest of them need to do any shooting. They catch up to Mike, who says that Lincoln's been taken off for surgery. Coulson, May, and Fitz have made it to the control centre.

Skye heads off to rescue Lincoln while Simmons tends to Mike's injuries and sends Ward to find something on which they can carry Mike out on. When Skye reaches Lincoln, his heart has stopped but she uses her ability to trigger his electrical charge to restart his heart. Simmons tries to kill Ward but Bakshi gets in the way and ends up dead first. Simmons goads Ward to try to kill her but he doesn't, telling her that she has changed and he is disappointed in her, after which he leaves on his own.

Ward calls Coulson after making it out and says how he has returned Kara to SHIELD and does deserve forgiveness, saying that he isn't the right man to fix her. Coulson has discovered the base of Hydra's leader, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. Coulson gives the location to Maria Hill so that the Avengers can defeat Hydra. This is what Theta Protocol was.

Raina is shown to be growing skeptical of Jiaying's ability to lead and has a vision of metal men destroying cities.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesdays on ABC at 9PM.

In Review: Ignite the Shadows by Ingrid Seymour

Released: April 23rd 2015
Format: Paperback & Ebook
Publisher: Harper Voyager
ISBN-13: 978-0008120498

I received an early copy for review for the Xpresso Book Tour. The book is available now in e-formats, but will be available in paperback come October. It's the first installment in a planned trilogy, with good world building and a likable heroine.

Sixteen-year-old Marci Guerrero is one of the best teen hackers in Seattle. However, she’d give up all her talents to know she isn’t crazy. Since the death of her father, she's lead a bleak life. She's been running from shadows most of her life, certain that something is very wrong with her, and she's right, but its nothing that she could have ever imagined. Her mother thinks that she's suffering from epilepsy, rather than unknowingly fighting an alien invasion.

Marci feels possessed by shadowy spectres that take control of her body and make her do crazy things. The blackouts and loss of control are signs that a parasite has latched onto a person’s brain and is trying to take control of its host. Most succumb to the infection within a few days, but not Marci, she's survived for more than eleven years.

While spying on the clandestine group known as IgNiTe, she is confronted by their mysterious leader, James McCray. His presence stirs the spectres inside her brain into a maddening frenzy. Her symptoms and ability to control them don’t go unnoticed by James, who soon recruits her. As IgNiTe reveals its secrets, Marci starts to realize that half the world’s population is infected with sentient parasites, which are attacking and eventually supplanting the human brain.

Now Marci wishes she was crazy, because this truth is far worse. The Eklyptors, the ancient and invading force has a smart and very scary plan for the human race. While the idea of body snatching and alien invasions are nothing new, it doesn't make the palpable fear of slowly losing control any less real. Who's infected and controlled, and who isn't becomes a very scary question, and propels a lot of the story along.

The entire tone of the story is dark and very angsty, with a dystopian backdrop that'll delight the targeted young adult audience. The journey is very bleak, with a happy ending not likely. While there is plenty to love about the novel, there are a lot of glaring plot holes, with strings of story lines tossed to the side as new elements added. Being the first in a planned trilogy though, allows the opportunity for these issues to be corrected and for the story to feel more complete.

The action is well written, but IgNiTe has a bad habit of keeping too many secrets that could really enhance not only the reader's experience, but Marci's as well. She's consistently berated for doing the wrong thing, when she isn't given all of the details. It happens too often. A better approach would have been for the strong willed protagonist to have chosen to go against protocol because of her own internal compass rather than being helpless and having no control of any situation.

Ignite the Shadows is off to a great and very intriguing start. It's the perfect mix of active storytelling and teenaged romance, without the romance being the full focus of the story. It's a great first book in the series. I'll be looking forward to book two, which will be released in 2016.

Community S6E8 - "Intro to Recycled Cinema" Recap

Following his success in the theatre production of The Karate Kid, Chang lands a part in a commercial for Kolb Family Foods and his work in the commercial becomes a viral hit. As the famous "Ham Girl" guy, he decides to head to Hollywood. Now that he is a bit hit, he begins to trash-talk the gang, claiming he had no friends and was just a loner. The group decides to cash in on his fame when Abed announces he has footage from a film he was shooting with Chang called Police Justice. They need to finish the film though and decide to do so by making the cop drama into a sci-fi film. Frankie puts the group in touch with a film producer named Maury who promises to be able to turn the film into a profitable hit for them.

Abed finally agrees to direct the film into Chief Starr and the Raiders of the Galaxy by incorporating outtake audio samples as well as recycled footage of Chang as Chief Starr. The Dean is standing in as Chang's stand-in body double. Jeff plays the mayor of outer space and Britta plays Princess Meridian (though Britta wants her to be called Brittana). Annie also stars by playing Scorpio 9, a pleasure droid assassin.

Abed is discouraged by the group's lack of interest in making the film of a high quality and Jeff pushes him to just keep up the quick pace so the film can be finished in a timely manner. This is successful but as the final cut is 87 minutes and the film needs to be cut to 81 minutes, Jeff's big scene gets cut. This leads to Jeff having an identity crisis as he begins to realise that he will be the last one of the group to leave Greendale. Abed offers up a pep talk to Jeff and though Abed offers to cut other parts, Jeff insists they cut his death scene (though they end up adding an added 30 seconds to the film).

Unfortunately, Maury delivers the bad news that the company funding the film has gone bankrupt because of YouTube so the film will not be distributed. Also, Chang gets kicked out of Hollywood for talking back to Steven Spielberg, after which he is promptly replaced by Randall Park. This forces him to go crawling back to Greendale.

Community airs on Tuesdays on Yahoo.

Turn: Washington's Spies S2E4 - "Men of Blood" Recap

Abe heads to the dead drop in the woods but much to his surprise, encounters Ben there. Following the falling out Ben had with Washington, he really wants to bring forth some better results. Ben joins Abe in his root cellar so they can plan their next move. Ben offers up invisible ink as well as a ship to be delivered to Abigail under the guise that it was carved by her son but it has a secret note implanted that has instructions on how to format her messages per Washington's instructions. Abe proposes that Townsend, the boarding house man who figured out Abe was a spy, can be a mole since he is intelligent and lives right in the thick of a horde of British soldiers.

Anna must play nice with Hewlett to get him to send the carved ship on to Abigail but in doing so, she has to promise to return the following night to see what's inside a new box. Hewlett promises her marvels unlike anything she's ever seen before. Later, Hewlett shows her a telescope with which to look up at the stars. Turns out Hewlett had his sights on being an astronomer before his family needed money so he decided to join the army as a source of income. She notes that the telescope could be used as a device of spying. His monologue overlays a montage of Simcoe and his rangers attacking a camp of soldiers. Simcoe leaves a note claiming the bloodshed was done by Major Hewlett, declaring death to all rebels.

Abe returns to New York to visit Townsend, who is less than pleased to see him but his curiosity is piqued when Abe declares that he is there in order to speak with him.

Arnold isn't doing so well in his recovery and Ben is growing increasingly concerned for his well-being. Since Ben is still on shaky ground with Washington, his hero may now serve as a substitute father/older-brother figure. Arnold is concerned about the harsh words he spoke to Washington earlier and stresses to Ben that Washington must be protected from all the traitorous men surrounding him.

John André is busy at work with his plans to turn Benedict Arnold. He plans to get a letter circulated regarding Arnold's loyalty to money first and foremost, will be received by General Lee. Being that André has been flirting with Peggy, he gets invited to her place where he is rudely interrogated by her father regarding his assets and background to determine if he is a suitable match for Peggy, though André has never actually proposed marriage or expressed an interest in doing so. He leaves, but not before giving Mr. Shippen a stern lecture on how he himself is also "new-money," but his fortune was built on the backs of slaves. Peggy follows after him to apologise but André isn't interested in hearing it, saying that he doesn't like being ambushed.

Deep in the New Jersey woods, Caleb and Robert Rogers are both heading to meet Captain Rider, the American private who became a pirateer who also looted the British ship that held the King George bust containing private documents. Caleb arrives first, hoping to politely manoeuvre the bust out but Rider's possessions but Rider doesn't want to give it up once he realises it may be something of value. He'd much rather see what sort of deal he can get it selling it on the open market but before anything else can happen, the group is attacked by Rogers and his soldiers. Rogers kills Rider and in the commotion, Caleb smashes the bust open and gets away with the documents.

Abe and Townsend meet in the dead of night to speak while playing a game of checkers. Abe has done some research on Townsend, knowing that his father has some Whiggish-political leanings, perhaps making him more sympathetic to the Patriot cause. But much to Abe's surprise, Townsend knows a great deal about Abe already. He knows about Abe's background, the reputation of his family, how Abe's brother was murdered, and even the marriage of convenience in which Abe took part of. Townsend doesn't seem to be interested in joining Abe as a spy but after their heated conversation is interrupted by a British soldier looking for a room, Townsend for whatever reason changes his mind. Outside, Ben chases after a man whom he has seen following him for some time and the two are attacked the alleyway by some robbers. The confrontation leaves the man, Henry Browning, mortally wounded, by the man is able to tell Abe that he was sent to follow him by Abe's father.

Peggy visits André in the garden and the two engage in a bit of verbal sparring. The two are rather evenly matched, perhaps to André's surprise. But Peggy butters him up reasonably well, noting how André is a man who makes his own fate and she wants to be a part of it. It's not long after that the two are kissing.

Arnold is delighted to receive a letter from Peggy, telling Ben how she is a beautiful and wealthy woman. Ben also relays the gossip to Arnold that is being said about Washington and Arnold himself. Ben then asks Arnold if he can apply to join his group. But Arnold says that Ben can be a spy or a soldier, but not both.

Abe returns home and angrily confronts his father. Henry Browning was just a poor, petty thief in debt, whom Judge Woodhull sent to watch Abe. Hewlett breaks up the fight because of all the noise and pushes the two to resolve their differences and says it's best that there be no secrets amongst them. Abe then shares his so-called findings to the both of them from his visit to the city. He claims he's still looking into the Sons of Liberty rebels and his father is quickly putting things together. Abe then names Henry Browning as a rabble-rouser he's tracked down in the city and his father sits there seething, now knowing what his son is up to, but unable to express anything further given Hewlett's presence.

Turn: Washington's Spies airs on Mondays on AMC at 10PM.

The Following S3E10 - "Evermore" Recap

It's Joe Carroll's execution day and the preparations are underway. There's protestors outside the penitentiary and Joe still has his newly fashioned and sharpened weapon from the sunglasses he absconded. As Joe gets moved, he kills some guards and takes three hostages whom he barricades in the execution room with him. He informs the FBI and makes his demands, one of which is for Ryan Hardy to arrive in the next two hours or else everyone will die.

Theo retrieves his sister from a run-down house and kills the man with whom she was keeping company after he tries to stop Theo. Once his sister wakes, Theo fills her in on everything that's happened lately, including his killing Strauss and Ryan being after them. There's a plan but they're interrupted by the news involving Joe Carroll and his hostages.

Gwen calls Ryan before he's going to enter. She doesn't want him to go in and tries to tell him about being pregnant but he tells her to share her news after he's returned. He tells Mike and Max to look after each other if anything should happen to him. Ryan meets Joe at the door of the room he's barricaded in and Joe wants him to cuff himself but Ryan only agrees to do so once Joe has released the hostages. Joe only releases one but it's good enough for Ryan. Joe tazes Ryan once he gets inside.

Theo tells his sister how he needs the code which will give him the name of someone that can give him his anonymity back. She doesn't approve of him going after Ryan, saying it's too dangerous and that he'd be better off just disappearing.

Joe wants to have a conversation with Ryan. Joe is insistent that he and Ryan are soulmates and wants to stage an intervention that will force Ryan to admit some hard truths about himself. Joe threatens to cut out one of the hostage's eyes and Ryan then admits that Joe is in his dreams and in the dreams, they are friends who drink together and Joe teaches him to kill. This makes Joe remove the wire he had secured around Ryan's neck and says he's the only one who knows the real Ryan. Ryan is pushed to admit that he gets satisfaction from the power of killing. Joe uncuffs Ryan, who then punches Joe who places his arms out in surrender to be cuffed.

Theo hacks the prison security network to get a look inside. As Ryan leads Joe and the hostages towards the exit, Theo's sister hacks the system to release the death row inmates. They're trapped, since the FBI team waiting is unable to get inside since the whole system is down. The hostages are overwhelmed by the inmates. One inmates takes Joe off, while the politician-hostage gets stabbed. Two inmates take the female-lawyer-hostage off but Ryan, after overpowering the inmates he was fighting, takes off after them and kills the men and leads the woman back inside.

Joe is fighting his inmate-captor and Ryan arrives as Joe is being overpowered. It's clear that he's considering letting the man kill Joe but eventually, the good in him wins out and he saves Joe. Together, they take out the last inmate. The FBI are finally able to get inside and take control back of the situation.

Theo's sister wants to disappear and for Theo to go with him. Theo says that the only way to disappear is for Ryan to die, saying his death is the key to their future. Ryan calls Gwen to tell her that he needs to stay for Joe's execution and get closure on this. Meanwhile, Theo is finally able to crack the code after his sister gives him some words of guidance. The decrypted message reveals a set of coordinates.

Ryan asks Joe why today had to happen and Joe says that Ryan is his real legacy and Joe says that know he can die knowing he will live on through Ryan, whom he considers a brother. As a parting gift, Joe gives Ryan a cryptic message that is apparently meant to help against Theo. As Joe is about to die, he observes that Ryan is in the viewing gallery. Joe's final words are, "Quoth the Raven, never more." As Joe dies from lethal injection, Ryan appears rather shaken, though perhaps this is also due to the trauma and exhaustion of the day's events. Later, Ryan heads to a bar to grab a drink, and imagines that Joe is there to share a drink with him.

The Following airs on Mondays on FOX at 9PM.
