Salem Press Room at WonderCon 2015

Salem headed to Wondercon this year, and again it proves that witches can be dark and scary!

From creators and writers Brannon Braga (“Cosmos,” “24”) and Adam Simon (“The Haunting in Connecticut”), “Salem” season two opens at the dawn of the witch war set into motion at the end of season one, with its catalyst and Salem’s deadliest witch, Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery, “Made in Jersey,” “Human Target”) at the center of the mayhem as she faces off against new and old adversaries vying for her throne.  In the wake of the destruction caused by the Grand Rite, completed by Mary and inadvertently triggered by Isaac Walton (Iddo Goldberg, “Mob City”) in the season one finale, the fates of Captain John Alden (Shane West, “Nikita, “ER”), Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel, “Arrow,” “Fringe”), Tituba (Ashley Madekwe, “Revenge”), Anne Hale (Tamzin Merchant, “Jane Eyre”), Mercy Lewis (Elise Eberle, “The Astronaut Farmer”) and Isaac hang in the balance.

New to the embattled 17th-century village for the second season of “Salem” are Lucy Lawless as Countess Marburg, one of the last descendants of a legendary line of ancient German witches; Stuart Townsend as Samuel Wainwright, a mysterious doctor looking to uncover the secrets of Salem as he keeps a few of his own; Joe Doyle (“Raw”) as Baron Sebastian Marburg, the charming and cultured son of the Countess; and Oliver Bell (“The Saint”) as Mary’s long-lost son, who was revealed in the season one finale to have been secretly kept alive all along by her coven.

At WonderCon 2015, the cast and crew of Salem came to talk about all the fun and darkness to come in season 2 of WGN America's witchy smash-hit! We sat down and asked a few questions of our own and after hearing all they had to say, we're even more excited to see what's in store!

Creators and Executive Producers Brannan Braga and Adam Simon spill a few secrets for Season 2 of Salem in the press room during Wondercon 2015. They tease Dark Mothers and Witch Wars,  the new characters that will be played by sizeable names likes Lucy Lawless and Stuart Townsend, the historical research they did into the real Salem witch trials, and John's dark new agenda. Since Seth Gabel was unable to make Wondercon, Braga and Simon were nice enough to talk about Cotton and Ann's love story that is every bit as epic, strange and star-crossed as John and Mary's was.

Janet Montgomery popped by the table next, sitting down for a chat in the Wondercon 2015 press room. She talks Mary's path, motherhood, and Mercy. Mary motivations aren't selfish, she's working for the good of all witches, and she'll be a force to be reckoned with.

Shane West stopped by in the end, practically bursting from his shirt, and being his normal charming self. He talks John's bloodthirsty path of revenge, speaking in tongues and how Nikita helped him prepare for his current role.

The supernatural thriller that is Salem airs on WGN America on Sundays at 10:00pm/ET.
